The lamp at Scarrow Head had gone dark twice that week, and Ada Penhallow was not going to let it happen a third time while her father lay in the cottage with his bad hip and his temper. She climbed the iron stairs with the oil can under one arm and the matches in her apron pocket, counting the steps out loud because counting kept her from thinking about the sea below.

The lens room smelled of paraffin and cold brass. Outside, the sky had cleared after days of murk, and the stars came out so thick over the water that they looked spilled. Her father's chart book lay open on the sill where he had left it, pages soft from handling. In the margin he had pencilled a line of tiny stars, one beneath another, and beside them the words steer by these when the light fails.

Fog rolled in from the west just after ten. She could not see the rock or the boats, only the faint white wall pressing on the glass. She lit the wick, turned the mechanism by hand, and looked up through the lantern panes until she found the stars her father had drawn, falling down the sky in a neat vertical row. She fixed her eyes on the lowest one and kept them there.

At first light the fog lifted. Three boats came round the point, all of them home. Ada sat on the top step with the chart book on her knees and read the margin again, and saw that beneath the stars he had written her name, small and careful, as if he had meant it to be found.
