Mrs Pell kept the tin of gold leaf under the counter of her haberdashery in Saltcombe, and every October the fairies came to ask for it. Nobody in the town believed her when she said so. They arrived at dusk as they always had, three of them perched on the sill beside a tarnished brass crescent that someone had hung there for luck, and they tapped on the glass until she unlatched the window.

"The moon has worn thin at the horns," said the tallest, whose voice was like a spoon against a teacup. "We need the gold to mend her." Mrs Pell had heard that before. She had also heard the price, which was always the same: a season of clear nights, and a silver chain for whoever in the house asked for one. She fetched the tin anyway, and watched them pick at the flakes with needle-thin fingers, their wings flat and bright as the stripes on a bolt of silk.

Her grandson Tobias, nine years old and certain he was too clever for nonsense, had crept down the stairs in his pyjamas. He counted the fairies, then the beads of a necklace one of them had dropped on the counter, then asked what they wanted for the silver. The tallest looked at him a long time. "Only that you stop tapping your foot when we sing," she said. "It puts the stars off their rhythm."

The next morning the crescent on the sill gleamed as if newly cast, and a row of hammered silver coins lay threaded on a loop of thread beside the till. Tobias wore it to school. When his teacher asked where he had got such a thing, he told her the moon had sent it, which was true enough, and he kept his foot very still all through the spelling test.
