The narrowboat Patience carried coal along the Staffordshire and Worcester canal for thirty-one years, and every spring her owner, Tom Harker, painted her roses the way his mother had taught him, one petal at a time, sitting on an upturned bucket by the lock. On the cabin side he painted two doves with spread wings, one facing east and one facing west, because a boat that travels both ways should have a bird for each direction.

The silver paint ran out the winter Nell Pargeter's father took ill at Lock Nine. Tom ordered more from a chandler in Stourport, but the tin came back gold, and he used it on the borders and the butterflies anyway, since nobody on the towpath minded a bit of brightness. Nell kept the lock book in a tin box and wrote the times down in pencil. When her father could no longer climb the gate, Tom began leaving the Patience tied at the lock overnight so she would not be alone with the paddles in the dark.
By the second summer the two doves had changed. Tom swore the eastbound one had turned its head toward the stern, and that the westbound one had folded its wings in, as if waiting. Nell said the paint had simply dried unevenly in the damp, and she was probably right. She still walked the towpath each evening to check the bow was secure, and once, when the rain came sideways, she stood under the cabin roof and sheltered there until it passed.
The following spring Tom painted the doves again, but he left the silver alone and used the gold, so that from the bank they seemed to be catching the last of the light. When Nell came down the towpath with the lock book under her arm, the boat was already waiting with its gangplank down, and the roses were fresh on the cabin side.
