Mr Pascoe had promised the metal tin would last the season, which was the sort of thing he said about everything, including his knees and his late wife's pasties.

Nell Trelawny came in out of the rain with her hood dripping and a willow hoop in her fist. Grey cord was wound round it, three gull feathers hung from the bottom, and the web inside was knotted so fine I could barely see the gaps. Her grandmother had made it, she said, to catch the bad weather before it reached the nets. Would I paint it on the bow, somewhere the sea would see it first? I said I'd have to ask the boat. She said the boat had already agreed, and she laughed when I looked up at the ceiling for help.

So I painted it. A sun with twelve points on the transom, its rays going out like a dare. Two crossed arrows on the mast to point the wind home. Chevrons along the rail, one row in gold and one in silver, so anyone reading the boat from the quay would know which way she was meant to go. At the last I laid a single feather at the stem, and the lamp caught it, and for a moment the whole hull looked like it had been persuaded to keep something back for us.
