The sun had been stolen twice before Odile's grandmother was born, so the women of Cold Quay no longer trusted anything that shone. Odile did not trust it either. She traded a coil of hammered copper wire for a sheet of thin gold and silver foil from the tinker at the wrecked lighthouse, who swore each piece would hold on skin until the tide turned. There were two suns, four triangles, a stacked chevron, a long looping band and two small hearts, each pierced through with an arrow. The tinker said the arrows were for finding things and the hearts were for keeping them.

She pressed the sheet against her forearm and walked out over the mud flats at low water, to where the ferry Halcyon lay on its side with the sun-thief inside it. He kept the daylight in a glass jar on a rusted shelf, and nothing in Cold Quay had been warm since he began. Odile did not ask for it back. She knelt on the hull, held out her arm, and let the two suns catch the grey light coming through the porthole. The thief leaned close, the way a man does when he sees something he has lost, and reached for the foil.

The tinker's sheet was thinner than it looked, and the foil came away on his fingers in a bright ribbon. The jar went over. Light poured across the cabin, climbed the looping band, ran up the chevron and out through the broken windows like water finding its level. Odile followed the arrows back across the flats, her skin still gold where the sheet had been, and behind her the thief sat in the dark holding nothing at all.
