A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okafor had the proof sheet pinned under the lamp before I'd got my coat off, and the first thing I saw was that the Buddha was sitting the wrong way round. Not the figure itself, which was just a dark silhouette the way the artwork had always been, but the foil plate. Someone at the bindery in Walsall had flipped the whole sheet when they cut the die, and every hand now pointed left like a badly written letter.

"They'll never notice," Okafor said, already reaching for the cutter. "Nobody reads a gold transfer for grammar."

I didn't argue. I was twenty-two, the shop on Belgrave Road paid me by the sheet, and the mandalas were the only part of the job I loved. The big one at the bottom left had taken me a fortnight to draw up, each ring finer than the last, so fine that a thumbnail would catch it. I had traced it four times on greaseproof before anyone let me near the brass.

That evening, with the shop empty and the radio turned low, I lifted the hamsa hand off the proof and held it to the window. The light came through the paper and the eye in its palm shone the colour of a wedding ring. The mirror had been wrong on the plate, but in the glass it stood up the right way round, as if it had always known where it was going. I wiped a fleck of ink from the eye with my sleeve, folded the sheet along its crease, and left it on the bench for the morning, where the first van would take it away.
