A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Shut the hatch and pass me that ladle, because this is a story for the stew and not for the watch. Forty years back, the Hesper carried a cook who sold trinkets from a tin box at every port, and the one I remember best was a sheet of gilt charms a Lisbon peddler had pressed on him for a shilling: chain bracelets, little chevrons pointing up the mast, a cross no bigger than a thumbnail, triangles cut like the sails we patched from old canvas.

Young Dacre Pim bought a sheet from the cook's box the night we cleared the Tagus and pressed the feathers onto his wrist. Feathers, he said, were for going up and coming down. The bosun called him a peacock, and Dacre laughed too, though he kept turning the crossed arrows on the back of his hand toward the lamp to see them shine. Nobody on a ship is teased out of a thing they've decided to carry.

Off the Horn the foresail split in a squall and the topmen went aloft in the dark. Dacre went up first, as he always did, and when the yard swung he caught the chain bracelet on a stay and hung there, swinging, while the rest of us hauled and swore. The foil had gone dull with salt by then. When they got him down he was shaking and grinning, the feathers still stuck fast to his skin.

The sea doesn't read charms, boys, and I'll not tell you a penny's worth of gilt kept him alive. It was his own two hands. I still have that rose gold feather on my own wrist, rubbed nearly clean now, and I find it every time I scrub the pot.
