A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the dance hall above the mill at Harrowby, the fiddler would not start until the lamps were trimmed, and every year it was Edith Calloway who trimmed them, because her father had made the brass rings that held the wicks. He had also made the armbands. They were thin strips of beaten metal cut into chevrons and diamonds, and the dancers bought them for a penny a night and gave them back at dawn.

One winter a stranger came up the river road with a sack of gold leaf and asked for work. He said he could make a band that would keep a dancer on her feet until the last reel. Edith's father sent him off, but the stranger left the leaf on the step anyway, and Edith found it in the morning, folded in paper with a wave drawn on it and one line underneath: the river always wants to take you home.

She pressed the leaf into the lattice pattern her father used for the band edges, and she worked late by the cold forge, shaping leaves along a stem and triangles like the peaks above the valley. When the hall filled that Saturday, the fiddler played a reel nobody knew, and the dancers' arms flashed gold and silver under the lamps. They danced until the wicks burned down to the brass.

Nobody could say afterwards who had been dancing with the stranger, only that his bands had been made of river water, and that some of the dancers walked home by the riverbank and did not come back to the hall. Edith kept her father's tools and never made another band without first looking at the river. The lamps at Harrowby were trimmed by someone else after that.
