Gold temporary tattoo designs on card

Fine line · Colour · Flash

The image shows two views of a packaged temporary tattoo sheet, one with the designs on a grey header card and one with the sheet laid on white. The designs include arrows, daisy-like flowers, small hearts and a script word reading love, all in metallic gold. The linework is thin and uniform on a plain white background, with no shading.

The gift shop on Inish Carra sold more of the gold transfers that July than anything else, which Mum said was proof the mainland had lost its taste. I stacked the card sheets by the till between the postcards and the tins of shortbread, headers facing out so the metallic sheen caught the afternoon light off the harbour.

The boy from the Dunmore ferry came in on the Thursday, asking for arrows. He had a list typed into his phone: two arrows, one heart, a daisy if I had one. I told him the arrows pointed back the way he'd come, and he laughed and said that was exactly what he wanted. He lifted one off the sheet with his thumbnail, slowly, the way you'd lift a stamp, and pressed it down while I counted his change into his palm.

He came back on the last boat on Saturday with the backing paper folded in his pocket and a question. Could I show him the love script in a different gold? I said it only came in the one shade. He nodded as if that settled something, then asked whether the daisies were drawn from real flowers. I told him they were drawn from the ones that grow wild on the machair, the ones my grandmother used to pick for the chapel steps.

After he'd gone I found a single arrow stuck to the inside of the window glass, pointing up the hill towards the ruined chapel. I left it there. In the morning the sun had lifted it clean away, and the glass was blank again, though the arrow still seemed to be pointing somewhere.
