The crate came up with the last mule before the snow shut the road, and I have been cutting it into strips ever since, by the stove, with the good scissors Father left us. Every sheet is the same: chevrons stacked like the roofs of the upper huts, diamonds linked end to end like the rope we strung across the gully, arrows pointing up the valley toward the pass as if anyone needed telling. The foil is so thin it crinkles when the stove breathes on it. Gold on one side of the sheet, silver on the other, and the pedlar swore they would hold for a week on skin.

Half the village has come down to the inn to ask for them. Mrs Calloway wants the triangles for her daughter, six of them in a row up the forearm, because the girl says they look like the peaks she means to climb one day. I told her they would last until the first washing. She paid me in eggs anyway.

Yesterday a boy from the lower farm held out his wrist and asked which colour was luckier. I said gold, because that is what the sheet calls the one that catches the lamp. He chose silver because the leaves on it were the kind that grow along the river, and he wanted the river on him when he went down to the market town. I think he understood the thing I could not say: foil only shines while it is new.

The last sheet is marked YS-22, the one with the most arrows. I am keeping it. Come up before the thaw and bring the good scissors back.
