Mickey Mouse outline tattoos in a three-image collage

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The collage shows three black tattoos. The largest is a single-line outline of a Mickey Mouse head on the upper back near the neck, with the word dream in joined script running along its lower edge. A small script mark sits behind an ear, and a bold black silhouette of Mickey Mouse with ornamental patterned fill wraps the inner forearm.

The reel came back from the lab with the join in the wrong place, so for a week I spent my nights at the Pelham splicing by hand under the bench lamp. Nobody else wanted the late shift. Mr Okafor had gone to his daughter's in Leeds and left me the key, the cash tin and a note that said Don't let the cat near the gate. The cat, Biscuit, sat on the rewind table and watched me work with the air of a critic.

On the Thursday a boy came to the back door with a cardboard tube under his arm. He said his grandmother had drawn the picture before she died and he wanted it on the screen before the house was sold. Inside was a sheet of tracing paper: two round ears joined to a round head in one unbroken line, and under the chin, in looping pencil, the word dream, running off the edge as if it had been written in a hurry.

I cut three frames of leader, inked the drawing onto them with a fine nib and wound them into the spool before the matinee. Every projectionist knows you cannot draw on film and expect it to hold, but I had spent enough nights with a grease pencil to know that a line held still for one twenty-fourth of a second reads as a dream to anyone who wants it to. When the lamp came up, the two black circles bobbed across the curtain for the length of a breath, then the word slid under them, and somewhere in the dark a woman laughed out loud.

The boy was waiting by the exit with his cap in both hands. I didn't tell him it had been three frames. I said it had run for a full minute, which was a lie, and he looked so pleased that I felt no guilt at all. Biscuit followed me back up the stairs to the booth with her tail high, as if we had both got away with something.
