Mickey and Minnie kissing on the chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Two cartoon mice, Minnie with a bow and Mickey, face each other with eyes closed as they kiss. The linework is bold and clean, with soft grey shading on the bodies, ears and shoes that gives them volume. The black and grey design is centred on the upper chest, with green fabric visible at the edges of the frame.

The boarding house on Saltmarsh Row had nine bedrooms, a brass gong for breakfast, and a mouse hole behind the back-parlour skirting that Mrs Pargeter swore she would block up every spring and never did. The two mice who lived there were known to the lodgers only as a rustle after the gas was turned down. The taller one had round ears like two pennies and a pair of shoes cut from a pilchard tin. The other wore a bow of blue ribbon she had taken from a lodger's hatbox, and she was proud of it.

Every August the lodgers walked down to the harbour wall to watch the boats come in, and every August the mice went too, riding in a basket of crab shells. One evening the sea came over the wall early. The lodgers ran for the steps. The mice stayed on the top stone, because the bow had caught on a rusty bolt and would not come free, and the taller mouse would not leave without her.
They stood there with the spray coming up over them. He said, plainly, that he had meant to ask her something since the spring, and she said she knew, and then neither of them asked it. Instead they leaned in, shut their eyes and kissed, which was the bravest thing either of them had ever done. When they opened their eyes the wall was dry and the bow was free.
In the morning the tide had left two pairs of tin-lid shoes on the sand, side by side, and nobody on Saltmarsh Row ever learned whose they were. That week Mrs Pargeter went to seal the mouse hole and found it already stuffed with a twist of blue ribbon. She never mentioned blocking it again.
