Mickey Mouse silhouette on the wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small Mickey Mouse silhouette sits on the inner wrist, shown in a black and white photograph with a grey sweater cuff below it. The figure is filled with fine, dense hatched lines that give it a soft, textured shading rather than a solid black fill. The plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin around it.

The lamp-makers of Orrendale kept one rule above all others: a shadow is only as true as the lines you spend on it. Master Ilse Varrow taught me that across eleven winters, making me hatch a single ear on copper a hundred times before she let me touch a face. "Solid black is for coal men," she would say, tapping my plate with her pen. "Give the dark some breath."

The Duchess of Penhallow sent for us in the thaw. Her daughters were frightened of the nursery wall, where the candle threw hard angles across the plaster, and she wanted something gentler. So I drew a mouse with round ears, a waiting stance and one hand lifted as if to greet someone coming up the stairs. I filled him with fine crossed lines, dense enough to hold the dark but loose enough that the light could slip through, and when Ilse held the finished plate to the flame, the figure seemed to draw a breath.
The Duchess kept the lantern. I never saw the nursery, but a page brought word that the girls had named the shadow Tuppence and would not sleep until he had been wished goodnight. Years later, when the old palace burned and the guild scattered to the four corners of the kingdom, I carried one spare plate in my coat, because a shadow that small is easy to lose.
Now I light a candle each evening over my own bench, and there he is at the edge of the wall, lines soft as breath, one hand raised. I wave back. He is the only work I ever made that waited for me to finish my tea.
