Mickey Mouse with puzzle piece fill on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Mickey Mouse head is tattooed on the top of a bare foot, with the ears and head filled with interlocking puzzle pieces in red, orange, yellow, green and blue. The face has black outlines, a grey nose and a skin-toned fill, and a small blue puzzle piece sits to the right of the ears. The photo is taken from above, with the toes in the lower left and a flat tiled floor in the background.

The lens came apart on a Tuesday, which Tam said was the only sensible day for it. Eleven pieces of old glass lay across the lamp-room floor like a dropped dinner plate that had been thinking about it for years. I put the kettle on, because no handbook I've ever been given covers a broken lighthouse, and tea at least is a procedure.

Tam was nine and had been sent out to me for the summer because his mother needed some quiet. He sorted the pieces by colour without being asked, reds with reds, the greenish ones that threw the light sideways into the corners. By Thursday he had a grid taped to the boards and a sheet of tracing paper pinned over the cupboard door, and he would not hear that a puzzle with no picture on the box was a waste of an afternoon.

The picture came from the weather. On Friday the wind swung north and the spray hit the glass hard enough to salt every fragment, so Tam wiped each one dry on his jumper and hummed while he worked. Two round ears took shape first, one built from blue and red knobs, the other from yellow and green, and then a crooked face with a slate-grey nose. When the last piece clicked into place, we both stood back. A cartoon mouse grinned up at us from the floor, pleased with itself.

On Monday the relief boat came round the point slowly, the way boats do when someone aboard is squinting at a chart. Captain Hamish looked up at the lamp room, then at the grin set into the glass, and laughed so hard he nearly missed the landing. Tam waved the whole way out to sea, and I kept my hand on the switch, just in case the mouse was wrong about the rocks.
