Ringed planet tattoo on the wrist

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small ringed planet, resembling Saturn, is drawn on the inner wrist with a dark outline and soft grey shading on the globe. The ring is a single horizontal stroke that passes through the planet with a lighter gap above it. The hand is held palm up against a blurred purple and blue galaxy image, which fills the background.

The steel hoop wobbled on its wire before the drum had finished rolling, and Ida Crane felt the wobble in her back teeth. Her grandfather had spun that hoop for forty seasons. Now the tent sagged over half-empty benches in a Lincolnshire field, and the new owner, a man in a camel coat called Pardoe, had already counted the seats twice.

Ida stepped through the hoop regardless. She set it turning at her waist, then at her shoulders, the way the old tune asked. A boy in the third row lifted his hand, and she smiled at him. At the tent flap Pardoe made a note in his ledger. "Bring it in, Ida," he said. "Nobody pays to watch a hoop go round."

Afterwards she sat on an upturned crate with the hoop across her knees, rubbing the grey patch where the paint had worn down to bare metal. Her grandfather used to say the ring was the only part of the planet that never fell in. It just kept the globe company without touching it. She tilted the steel towards the lamp, and through the open flap the sky was thick with stars, cold and blue as the ink in Pardoe's book.

Pardoe sold the tent in November. Ida kept the hoop. In spring she hung it on a nail above her bed in a flat over a chip shop in Boston, where the streetlamp slid across it each night. Before sleep she held her palm up to the ceiling and let the ring drift over her fingers, slow and level, as if it had somewhere to be.
