The brewer's wedding ran dry on the second night, and nobody in Little Haddon could say who had been sent down the lane for more. Old Marjory swore it was the baker's boy. The baker's boy swore on his mother's loaves that he had been asleep under the cart all afternoon.

What came up the lane at dusk was no taller than a milk churn, yellow as a yolk, with one round brass eye set inside a ring of goggles. It wore blue dungarees buckled at the shoulder, a red letter M stitched over its belly, and it carried a tankard in both hands with froth spilling over the rim. "Who sent you?" asked the bride's father. The creature only lifted the tankard higher, and the hall, which had been quarrelling about the price of hay, went quiet.

Every time a jug was emptied, the creature filled it again from a cellar nobody had seen. It danced badly with the children and stood on the edge of the top table to toast the couple. Nobody asked what it wanted until the brewer did, in the grey hour before dawn. The creature pointed a small yellow finger at the bride's grandmother, who was snoring in a chair by the hearth with her good shoes still on.

Nobody remembered agreeing to anything, but by morning the shoes were gone, the tankard was full, and the creature sat alone on the doorstep, drinking slowly, its shadow stretched long across the cobbles as if it were still waiting for someone to come out and sit beside it.
