One eye, a steel goggle strapped over the top of his head, dungarees the colour of a swimming pool. When I asked his purpose in the United Kingdom he shot one arm straight up, fist clenched, and said "Superman" in a voice like a kettle lid.

My supervisor, Pat, said we'd had worse. We had a man with a goat last spring, and the goat had a better passport. I asked for paperwork. He produced a folded cape from somewhere inside his dungarees, shook it out with a crack, and offered it to me as proof. It smelled of chip fat and wet grass. I stamped it anyway, because the form had no box for capes and I had no box for him.

He wanted to know if the stamp made him a hero. I told him it made him a visitor. He considered this for a long moment, then pressed his face against the glass, the eye swivelling up towards the departures board, where a gull had landed on the sign for Calais.

When my shift ended he was still there, sitting on the kerb with the cape around his shoulders, waiting for the wind off the Channel to pick up. It did. He rose a metre, wobbled, and drifted over the car park like a yellow kite that had finally been given permission. I kept the stamp on my palm until lunch. It said ADMITTED in purple, and it was the only ink I have ever seen fly away.
