Minion dressed as Scooby-Doo on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A yellow Minion wears a Scooby-Doo costume, with a brown dog head, blue collar and yellow tag, standing in front of a night scene. Behind it sit a dark haunted house silhouette with lit windows, bats and a blue sky shading to purple. The soft, cartoon-like shading and bold colour fill the rounded area of skin, with the design centred on the calf.

The jumble sale costume was two sizes too big for Pim, so the brown dog's ears flopped over his goggles every time he ran, which was awkward when you were meant to be the most frightening thing on Gallows Lane. Mrs Ashdown had said it would scare the whole village off the hill. She had said that about the rain too.

The lane had been dark since the Hollis house stopped taking visitors. Its turrets stood black against a purple sky, and one window glowed in the top room where nobody had lived for forty years. Pim crept up the gravel with his blue collar buckled tight and his yellow tag jangling, and practised his best howl. It came out as a squeak. Somewhere above the bats, something cleared its throat.

It was old Mr Corran, the caretaker, in a bedsheet with two holes cut for eyes and a torch tucked under his chin. He had been doing exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason. The council meant to sell the house for flats, and nobody would buy a haunted house with a grumpy caretaker in the garden. "You're a dog," Corran said, squinting. "Dogs don't wear goggles." "This one does," said Pim, and held up his tag, which had his name stitched on in capitals.

They spent the rest of the night at the gate together, swapping spooks, until the sky went grey over the chimneys. The flats were never built. Corran still insists the house is haunted, and Pim has never once argued, since he is the one who keeps lighting the top window.
