A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The painter, Mrs Hobday, had arranged a pineapple, three bananas, a heap of peaches and a bunch of grapes in a bowl too small for them, then gone off to the bakers and left the frame unfinished on its easel. Stuart, who had been hired to carry canvases and was not supposed to touch the fruit, climbed onto the stool to see what the fuss was about. The frame was scrolled and gilded and empty, except for a space shaped exactly like him.

He tried the peach first. It fell off and rolled under the radiator. He tried a banana, which slid down one goggle, then the pineapple, which stayed put because it was heavier than sense. By the time Mrs Hobday came back with a paper bag of rolls, Stuart was wearing the whole still life like a crown, grapes dangling over his one eye, grinning like someone who had solved a problem nobody had set him.

"Stuart, what have you done?" she said. "I've finished it," he said. "Look, there's a space for me." She sighed, took up her brush and painted the blue overalls around him, because a picture with a hole in it was no use to anyone, and a helper who stayed still was worth two who didn't.

The picture hangs above the bakery counter now. Customers drop coins into the bottom curl of the frame, and on the quiet mornings a banana has gone missing from the bowl, and nobody in the shop has the nerve to ask the painting about it.
