Moka pot and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm shows a traditional style tattoo of a stovetop espresso maker in grey shading with a dark outline. Beside it sits a yellow flower with a brown centre and dark leaves, both in bold flat colour. The arm is photographed against a grey wall and pavement, with the tattoo filling the frame.

The last train from Shrewsbury was four hours late, and Maud Price had been waiting behind the buffet counter since six with nothing to do but watch a kettle that refused to boil. The moka pot was her own, a dented eight-cup thing that had come up from Naples in her late husband's suitcase in 1971 and had never once been washed with soap. She packed the grounds down with her thumb, the way Sergio had shown her, and set it on the ring.

Nobody came in until the signalman, Dai Rowlands, shook snow off his cap and asked whether she had anything hot that wasn't tea. She poured him a cup no bigger than a thimble. He drank it standing, eyes closed, and said it tasted like the platform in July. Maud did not tell him that she had dug up the primroses from the bank behind the station that morning, pressed them in the atlas, and tucked one under the saucer for luck. Some things were for nobody but her.
When the train finally sighed into the platform, a woman in a grey coat came straight to the counter with a paper ticket clamped in her glove. She wanted coffee, she said, the proper kind, because the man she was meeting had promised her one at the end of the line. Maud pulled the pot off the heat just as it began to gurgle and poured it out black and thick.
The woman lifted the saucer to set down her coin and found the flower stuck to its underside. She went very still. "He always did that," she said. "Left one on every table he ever cleared." Maud had no answer for that, so she poured the second cup and let it be.
