Money bag and banknotes on a palm

Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A money bag marked with a dollar sign sits on a stack of banknotes, with loose coins beside it and short radiating lines around the bag. The design is drawn in solid black outline with little or no shading, and the flat, bold lines suit a traditional style. The palm fills the centre of the frame against a dark background, with a partial dark tattoo visible at the wrist.

The bag came over the counter of the Halfway Service Station at ten past three, when the heat off the tarmac was still rising in sheets. Dalton Reece set it down like a sack of flour, and the canvas gave a soft clink. "Count it," he said. "Don't trust me to." I didn't. I was nineteen and had minded the till on Route 9 for a summer, and I had never seen anyone hand over money without wanting something back.

He wanted a tank of diesel, a bottle of water and the loan of my cousin's truck for an hour, and I refused him the truck. He left the bag anyway. On the counter he tapped a stack of notes flat with two fingers, and a handful of coins rolled off the edge and spun under the crisps rack. I got down on my knees in the dust and gathered them while the air conditioning wheezed. When I stood up he was gone, and the road outside shimmered with nothing on it at all.

Three days later a woman in a grey Volvo pulled in and asked after the bag. She didn't say what was in it. She said the man had owed her father since before either of us was born, and that the debt would be settled by whoever carried the bag across the state line. I asked her which line. She laughed and pointed at the ruled horizon where the road bent out of sight.

I drove it out myself in the end, one afternoon with the windows down. Past the last cattle grid I found a lay-by with a single kitchen chair set in the shade of a dead mesquite, and on the seat a fresh stack of banknotes weighted with a little pile of coins. I left the bag where it was and drove back with the coins rattling in the cup holder, watching the heat wobble over the empty road.
