A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gideon Fairweather had lost the terraced house, the seaside hotel and his grandmother's silver before the dice ever left the tin, and now he sat on the running board of a 1920s motor in the Lamb and Flag's yard with a pink ceramic piggy bank wedged under one arm. The bank belonged to Mr Harcourt Plum, a gentleman in a top hat tilted at the angle of a man who had never once been sorry. Plum had won the bank off him on a folded red banner laid across the back room's billiard table, and he wanted it back with interest.

They played on because nobody in the Lamb and Flag had ever refused a game with a stranger. Gideon rolled a four and a three, landed on Plum's cobbled lane, and paid in brass buttons. Plum tapped his cane on the floorboards, twice, like a man knocking on a coffin lid. "The bank is not for sale," he said. "It is a promise. Every coin you feed it is a day you do not spend."

Gideon thought of his grandmother, who had kept the silver locked in a drawer and never once used it, and of the motor beneath him, which had not turned over since the Coronation. He rolled the dice again and got two sixes, which made Plum's eyebrows climb into the brim of his hat. Gideon handed over the last of his buttons, one at a time, into the slot in the pig's back, and listened to each one drop.

When the bank was empty, Plum lifted it, shook it once, and smiled. Outside, the motor started first time, which was more than could be said for the pig.
