Black and grey dotwork tattoo on a forearm, showing a moon and stars over mountains and pine trees inside a diamond shape.

Night mountain scene in a diamond on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped design shows a night sky of stippled dots with small star points and a dotted moon above a line-shaded mountain range. Dense pine trees in solid black fill the lower part of the diamond, with fine hatched lines giving the mountains their form. The piece is in black ink and grey tones, centred on the forearm against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Marigold had been tied below the lock at Ashford for three days when Nell first asked her father about the mountain. Tom Haldane was scraping pitch from the tiller and did not look up. Carrow, he said, was no mountain, only a heap of rock with pines on it. Nell had watched its outline from the cabin roof each evening, a dark diamond cut out of the stars, with the moon sitting in its notch like an egg in a cup.

Her mother, Ada, who had grown up on the water and trusted little she could not measure, said the moon would come down to anyone who carried it a bowl of river water. You had to climb in the dark with the lock lamps at your back, and you must not stop to rest under the trees, for the pines would hold you there as they held everything. Nell filled the blue enamel bowl at the weir and set off when the village lights had gone out.

The trees were close and smelled of cold resin. Where they thinned, the mountain showed itself, shaded in fine grey lines like a sheet pulled over sleeping shoulders, and the sky above was speckled with small white stars. Near the top the moon hung over the ridge, round and dotted like a thumbprint on glass. Nell held out the bowl and the moon slid into the water and trembled there. She turned without looking long, and far below the Marigold's lamp lay on the black river like a star that had fallen and stayed.

When she came down at dawn the barge was already loosed from its ropes and her father stood at the tiller with his hat pulled low. The blue bowl sat dry on the cabin step. Ada said nothing, only handed Nell bread and a sprig of pine from the coat hook. That night the moon rose exactly where Carrow had kept it, and Nell understood it had never been hers to carry, only to be shown the way back down.
