Moon phases and arrow on inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A horizontal arrow runs across the inner forearm, with feathered arrowheads at each end and a row of crescent and full moon phases along the shaft. Nested diamond outlines sit at the centre, with small dots scattered around the design. The linework is fine and the moons are shaded with stippled dots and soft grey tones, all in black ink against pale skin on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flour is still hanging in the air when you unlock the back door, and the lane behind Pelham Street smells of yeast and wet slate. Your aunt's rule was that nobody speaks before the first tray goes in, so you say nothing and tie your apron twice, the way she taught you, knots pulled tight enough to hold a night's worry in.

The moon is still up, low over the bins, a thin paring of it going white at one edge. You chalk the date on the board and count the phases under your breath the way she did: new, waxing, full, waning, and then the sliver that is almost gone. She used to say the sky kept its own baking hours, that the light came up the lane in the same order every morning, like a loaf rising in its tin.

The dough needs scoring before it goes in. You cut each boule with a razor on the diagonal, two long strokes crossing into a neat lozenge, and you think about the sack she kept by the proving cabinet, the one with the arrow she had stencilled on in red, pointing towards the back wall where the sun always came from. You never asked her why it pointed there. You are starting to suspect she knew exactly where the morning would be.

By six the window has turned the colour of weak tea. The last crescent has slipped behind the laundry chimney across the road, and you slide the first tray out into the grey light, every loaf cut clean across the top and all of them facing the same way.
