Moon, pine forest and seated figure on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey tattoo runs down the forearm of a person wearing a grey t-shirt. The upper section shows a glowing full moon, wispy clouds and scattered stars above a dark silhouette of pine trees. The lower section shows a seated figure with long hair above a softly shaded body of water, with smooth gradients giving depth across the composition.

The pines behind the dam had been planted by someone long dead, black against a sky the colony lamps never quite drowned out. The moon hung over them the way it always did, cratered and enormous, and laid a road of light across the water that broke apart whenever the wind touched it.

Her brother Tobiah had worked the gates for eleven years. He used to say the lake remembered every keeper's shift, that the level rose on nights nobody logged it. She had laughed at him. Now the council's survey drones hummed over the far bank taking readings, and the clipboard in her coat held a figure that said the water would be gone before the thaw.
She drank the tea anyway. Out on the glassy part of the lake a single ring spread outward from nothing, then another, and the moon's reflection shivered and reformed. Maren did not move. Her hand went to the pocket where Tobiah's old logbook sat, its spine soft from handling, and she opened it by moonlight to his last entry in neat capitals: LEVEL HOLDING. WATER KNOWS THE WAY HOME.
She took out her own pen and wrote beneath it the date, and then, after a long pause, LEVEL HOLDING. She closed the book, stood up, and walked back along the path between the trees without looking at the drones.
