Most ardently script on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the outer side of a foot and ankle with the words most ardently tattooed in flowing cursive script. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The lettering runs diagonally from the ankle bone down towards the top of the foot, against plain skin and a dark textured surface.

Hand me the scraper, lad, and mind the flour, because the oven won't wait on your daydreaming and it's forty minutes to dawn. Sit by the proving drawer where it's warm. I'll tell you about the letters that came to this shop when my mother ran it.

Every Thursday a postman with a bad knee carried an envelope up from Hull, addressed to Miss Edith Aske, care of the bakery. The paper smelled of coal smoke and tar. Each one ended the same way, in a hand that looped like a fishing line: most ardently, and then a name nobody in the village ever saw written out in full. Edith read them standing at the counter with flour on her thumbs. She never once laughed at them, though she told my mother the spelling was getting worse.
The letters stopped in the February of the big frost. My mother said nothing about it, but she began baking a second loaf each morning and leaving it on the sill outside the back door. Edith took it in before the milkman came and ate it cold, standing up, with her coat still buttoned. Nobody asked her why.
In the spring a parcel arrived with a Hull postmark and a brass ring wrapped in oilcloth. There was no letter, only a single line in pencil on the brown paper: the tide was kind this time. Edith wore the ring on a cord under her apron until she died. Pass me that tin, lad. Bread's done when it sounds hollow when you knock it, and so, I've found, is most of what people promise.
