Black fine line script tattoo reading most ardently across the inside of an ankle and foot.

Most ardently script on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words most ardently in a flowing cursive script, running diagonally across the skin from the ankle towards the top of the foot. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The plain dark carpet behind the foot keeps the focus on the lettering, with soft natural lighting across the skin.

Dear Nell,

The lane has been shut since Tuesday, when the drift came over the top field and buried the gate to the lower barn. Dad says we will dig out by Sunday if the frost holds off, but the frost has never once held off for him. I have been stacking the bales under the lean-to so the damp cannot get into them, and my hands have split along every knuckle, which Mum says is what comes of wanting to be useful.

The ewes lambed early this year, three of them in the one night, and I sat up with the lantern in the pen while the wind worked at the tin roof like someone trying to get in. One lamb would not take to its mother, so I carried it into the kitchen in a cardboard box and fed it from a bottle every two hours. Mum found me asleep on the settle with it curled against my neck and said nothing at all, which from her is a kind of blessing.

I keep meaning to tell you what I meant at the station, and then the words go thin on me the way ink does in the cold. So I will say it plainly here. I think of you when the bread rises, and when the milk turns sweet in the pail, and when the post van comes up the track and I run to the window before I remember you will not be on it.

Come in the spring, when the lane is clear. Bring the red scarf. I will meet the train with the cart if I have to walk the horse the whole way.

Yours most ardently, Tom
