Mother duck and four ducklings on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A mother duck with white feathers and red feet walks along the top of a foot, followed by four small yellow ducklings with red bills and feet arranged in a diagonal line towards the toes. The tattoo uses dark outlines with flat, simple colour fills and minimal shading. The yellow and orange ink dominates against the light skin, with the mother duck partly visible at the top right edge of the frame.

The five of them had been crossing platform four since the 7.12 pulled out, and Mrs Pemberton's brolly was the only thing keeping the ducklings away from the bench of cold chips. Mother Duck did not look back. She never looked back. Behind her, four yellow puffs waddled in a crooked line, each one certain it was the one in charge.

Oswin, the smallest, lagged beneath the timetable board. He read the departures aloud in a squeak: Leeds, Carlisle, Penzance. Mother stopped, turned her head one sharp degree, and Oswin hurried. At the far end of the platform the guard stood with his whistle halfway to his mouth and forgot to blow it.

They reached the footbridge at last, where the stairs ran down towards the car park. Mother climbed the first step with great dignity. The ducklings followed one at a time, bills first, the way ducks manage stairs. Oswin got stuck on the third step and sat down to think about his options.

By the time the four-fifteen to Scarborough drew in, the line had reached the carriage door, and all four were aboard before the doors chimed shut. Mother gave the guard a look that said the seats had been booked weeks ago. He checked his ticket book, found no ducks on it, and waved them through anyway.
