Two cartoon ducks on the torso
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two small cartoon ducks walk left to right across the skin, one larger and one smaller, with their feet shaded to suggest a ground shadow. The linework is thin and the bodies and wings are filled with soft grey shading, with no colour ink. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame, with fingers with pink nail polish resting on the skin at the top and dark fabric at the edges.

The flour was still warm in the crate when the big drake came waddling round the corner of Hollis Lane, his smaller companion trotting at his heel like a late bus. I had the back door propped open with a sack of semolina and was scraping the last tray of bloomers when I heard the slap of their feet on wet cobbles. Nobody else was up. The bakery on Tanner Street never opened before six, but the ducks had never learnt to read the sign.

Mrs Okafor from the chandler's told me they lived under the railway arch by the canal, a mother and her son, though the son was no longer small by any measure I could see. They walked the same line every morning, left to right past the bins, as if someone had chalked it on the ground. I tossed them the heel of yesterday's rye and they took it with the gravity of magistrates. The big one always waited for the little one to finish before she moved on.
This morning the little one stopped on the step and would not come. Her shadow lay long and grey across the flags where the lamp caught her. I thought of the dough proving in the back, of the oven I had to fire by half five, and of my own father who used to walk me to school this same way, slow on purpose. I broke off a larger piece and set it down beside her.
When I looked up the big duck had turned round. She waited there with her neck stretched, patient as a queue. The little one hopped down and fell in beside her, and they went off towards the canal together, two shapes shrinking into the grey, and I went back inside to find the oven had been ready for ten minutes.
