Mountain and pine tree ankle tattoo

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of a jagged mountain range flanked by two small pine trees on the left and one on the right, sitting across the ankle and lower leg. The linework is single and even, with no shading, and the ink looks dark and crisp against the skin. The skin is pale and the background is soft cream bedding, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

The snow has sealed the pass for three days, and the Ferrier's Rest has run out of everything except soup and argument. You are wiping the bar with a cloth that smells of peat when Agnes Lowrie sets a ledger down in front of you, open at a page of pencil sketches.

Every guest stranded here in the last forty years has left a drawing behind, most of them badly done: a dog, a rowing boat, a woman holding an umbrella against no rain at all. Yours is the last blank page. Agnes taps it with one finger. 'Your grandfather drew the range from that window every winter, and never lifted the pencil once. Said it was the only way to keep the peaks honest.'

You try it. The pencil wanders, stalls, starts again, and the jagged line comes out crooked and too tall. Outside, the wind shoves at the shutters, and beyond the glass the real mountains are only a rumour of black. You add three pines on the left and one on the right, because every old drawing in the ledger has that same lopsided balance, as if the trees had been counted before anyone planted them.

At dawn the plough grinds up from the valley road. Agnes reads the page, then nods at your crooked peaks as though they were a signature. 'That'll do,' she says, closing the book. 'Now you'll have to come back in summer and see whether the view matches.'
