Mountain and triangle design on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman's upper back shows a small tattoo of a mountain range drawn in black linework, with peaks partly shaded in dotwork. Beneath the peaks sit geometric triangles, one filled with solid purple and others built from fine horizontal lines and stipple. The image is a close, softly lit shot with the subject's dark hair and navy off-shoulder top framing the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ada, the theodolite has finally behaved, so I can tell you the good news before the rain sets in. We fixed the third station on the shoulder of the ridge above Glen Corrie, a bald knuckle of rock with a view of seven peaks. Mr Haldane insisted on sketching every ridge line in ink before we took a single bearing, which I thought fussy until the light came off the snow at four in the afternoon and I understood why he wanted the outline down on paper first.

The triangles were the difficult part. Every station needs a base line, and every base line needs a third point to close the figure, so we spent two days hunting for a mark the sheep could not knock over. In the end the lads cut a cross into a boulder, and I painted the pinnacle opposite it with a wash of lilac, mixed from the bramble juice Mrs Teale sent up in a jam jar. Haldane called it unscientific. He then stood in front of it for a full minute, which I have learned is his highest form of praise.

Hatching the scree fell to me, and I am better with a nib than I expected. Fine horizontal strokes for the shadowed faces, then stipple wherever the ground gives way to grit, until the whole slope reads like weather coming in across it. Haldane says the sheet will be pinned in the county office by Michaelmas. I have asked that the lilac triangle stay, whatever the clerks think of it.

Write when you can. Tell Father the apples are in and that I have not yet fallen off anything taller than a stile.
