Paper plane on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small paper plane is drawn in a single black outline on the inner forearm, built from simple triangles with a fold line through the middle. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The arm is shown at an angle in soft, warm light, with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame and the open hand and knitted sleeve in the foreground and background.

Bring nothing.

Ronnie Vosper was leaning on the gate by the level crossing with his cap pushed back, the way he stood when he wanted to look as though he had not been waiting. His call-up papers were folded in his jacket. He had told me the Thursday before, but I hadn't believed him until he showed me the stamp.
"You got it, then," he said.

He had been sending planes across the square since May, from the bench outside the Methodist hall to the window over the bakery, because my mother said I could not have a boy calling at the house and this was the only way round her. Every one had landed. He said that was because I was the only person in town who read the creases properly.
When the six-forty came grinding in from Penzance, I took the last sheet from my coat, unfolded it along the old lines until it lay flat, and folded it again wing to wing without writing a word. I threw it at the carriage window. It caught the wind off the estuary, banked once over the platform, and slipped in through the open glass where his hand was waiting for it.
