Mountain range and dotted triangles on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A mountain range with a line of pine trees sits across the forearm, drawn in black ink with stippled shading on the peaks and hatched detail on the slopes. Below the ridge, a row of dotted lines forms connected triangles and scattered dots that run the length of the arm. The image is in black and grey on bare skin against a plain light background, with the wearer's face and head cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had started before the last triangle was closed, and Ilse Marrow knelt in the lee of a cairn with her theodolite wrapped inside her coat. Below, the two valleys lay grey under the cloud, one with its lamps lit and one without. The commission had sent her up to fix the final point of the border, a line that ran along the ridge like a seam, and she had eleven days of figures that refused to agree with each other.

Her guide, Petr Lind, a customs man near retirement who knew every boulder on the pass, watched her swear at the tripod. "The peaks don't lie," he said. "The men who drew the line lied about which peak was which." He pointed with a gloved hand at a black fringe of pines on the far slope. "That's the treeline. My father said the old border followed the trees, because nobody farmed past them and nobody argued about them either."

She sighted the ridge again through the glass, and the dots she had pricked onto her chart over the weeks lined up with something she had been ignoring. Every fixed point sat on a shoulder of rock, and every rock had a stand of pines beneath it. The line had never been drawn across the mountains at all. It had been drawn by someone standing in the valley, looking up, and stopping where the trees gave out.

She unscrewed her pen, marked a final dot two hundred metres below the summit, inside the trees, and wrote beside it in small capitals: THE TREES STAY WHERE THEY ARE. Petr read it upside down and laughed. The snow thickened over both valleys at once, and then the lamps went out below, one by one, as if someone down there had agreed.
