Mountain ridge, pines and swallow on shoulder blade

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a mountain range drawn in thin black outlines, with a row of dark pine trees along its base. A small swallow in flight and a compass with north and west arrows sit above the peaks on the left. The work is in black ink only, with clean single-line linework and solid fills on the trees and bird, photographed on bare skin across the upper back.

Dear Tom,

The swallows went over the top of Carn Dhu on the second of October, low and quick, and I stood in the yard with the fork in my hand and counted them the way Dad used to, one for each fence post until I lost track. Mam says they know the way without a map. I told her that was what maps were for, and she said I'd been arguing with the sky since I could talk.

The frost has been in the troughs since Tuesday. We broke the ice on the top field with the spade, and the ewes came down to the gate looking put out about it. Above the wall the ridge is white right down to the pines now, and the pines are so black against it you'd think somebody had gone over them with a pen. I still have your compass in the kitchen drawer, the brass one with the chipped W. The needle sticks a little on the north side but it points true enough when you tap it.

I'm not writing to ask you back. You said you'd send word from the coast when the boat sorted itself out, and I'd like that word before Christmas if you can manage it. The bird is still the bird. I saw one little one on the byre roof this morning, stiff as a glove, and I thought it had stayed behind out of stubbornness, the same as I have.

Write when you can. Tell me which way you are facing.

Mac
