You are nine the summer the surveyor's pencil goes missing, and you find it under the lichen-grey stile at the edge of Hollin Dene, where the pines stop and the drystone wall begins. Your mother says it belongs to nobody, which is how you know it belongs to you.

Above the trees the ridge runs in three humps, the middle one taller, its shadow side gone dark as a boot. Every evening you sit on the wall and try to get them onto the back of an envelope. The first attempts look like bread loaves. Old Mr Pargeter from the forge leans over your shoulder, smelling of coal and peppermints, and tells you to hatch the shadows rather than colour them, because a mountain is only ever dark where it turns away from the sun.

So you practise. You fill the margins of your school exercise book with peaks, fine lines running down from each summit, short strokes where the rock folds. By August your hand can make a mountain in four seconds. Pargeter says that is still too quick to be honest, but he pins one of your sketches above the forge anyway.

The surveyor comes back for his pencil in September and takes the envelope with the three peaks instead, folding it carefully into his coat. Years later you still climb the stile before dusk, and the ridge is always there, each peak shaded on the side it hides from the light.
