Mountain range tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a mountain range with jagged peaks sits on the back of a neck, with hair visible at the left edge. The linework is fine and the peaks are partly shaded with darker fills and hatching, while the lower outline fades into the skin. The photograph is black and white, with blurred trees in the background and the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame.

Ada, the slate went off at Stourport this morning and the hold is empty for the first time since Lent. I stood on the cabin roof afterwards and watched the river go pink under the bridge, and I thought of you saying the hills would be the first thing a man missed. You were right, though I did not expect the missing to look like a line on a page.

Mr Pryce at the wharf had a bundle of roofing slates cut from the Corrow workings, grey as wet ink and split so clean you could see the grain run up in steps. He let me keep an offcut. One edge broke into three peaks and a notch, the same shape as the ones on the postcard you sent from Keswick before you went off with the Hallams.
Tonight I tied up under the poplars at Tewkesbury and laid the offcut on the table by the lamp. My thumb kept going to the ridge without my telling it to. Up the first peak, down into the saddle, up again. The cabin smelt of coal smoke and tar, and the water knocked against the hull like someone asking to be let in.
Pryce says there is a load of Corrow slate going north again in March, and the Hallams have a cottage above the workings. I have written to ask whether they need a boatman who knows nothing about climbing. I will post this at Gloucester. If you answer before the ice comes, I will walk up, and you can show me where the hills start.
