Mountain sunrise and maple leaves on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A lake sits beneath snowcapped mountains with pine trees along their base, framed by a rising sun with orange and yellow rays and purple clouds. The mountains use grey shading and black linework, while the sun, clouds and leaves are filled with bold red, orange, yellow and purple. The design is centred on the forearm against a red brick wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every morning the women of Harrow Bend stood on the lake shore before the shift whistle, because the sun did not come over Grey Ridge until the men had gone under the hill. Nobody remembered who had first decided this was the way of things. The shaft head sat on the far side of the water, and the seam ran so deep beneath the mountain that a man could walk a whole day and never see the sky.

Maren Solberg was nine when her father went down for the last time before the owners closed the seam. She did not cry at the gate. She took a fistful of red leaves from the maples along the shore, pressed them into his palm, and told him that if he kept one in his pocket the sun would know where to find him. He laughed, kissed her head, and went down.

That winter the pit flooded and the whistle did not blow for eleven days. On the twelfth morning Maren walked down to the water in the dark. The lake was still, the snow on the peaks had caught a light she had never seen before, and orange rose behind the ridge like something poured. The maples had turned overnight, every leaf on the shore burning. Then the cage came up at the far shaft, slow and dripping, and her father stepped out black to the elbows with one leaf still folded in his cap.

He said the sun had been waiting for him at the bottom, the way it waited for the women at the top. Maren never asked him how he knew. She only kept walking the shore each morning, and the sun kept coming.
