Colourful neo-traditional tattoo of a sunrise over green hills and a tree, framed by golden vines with blue and purple flowers, on a lower leg.

Sunrise landscape with flowers on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a sunrise over rolling green hills, with a single tree on the left and a pale road curving through the foreground. Pink, orange and blue clouds fill the sky, and a purple and teal flower sits at the top while a larger blue flower with green leaves sits at the base. Bold black outlines frame the scene in a golden vine-like border, with smooth, saturated colour shading throughout.

The sun would not sit right on the board. Ruth had painted it four times, and each attempt looked like a dropped yolk rather than anything with the nerve to rise over Cwm Harrow. She stood back from the trestle with a rag in one hand and a jar of turpentine in the other, while below the window the milk lorry ground its gears at the bend.

The tree was the real trouble. Her father had planted it the spring the lane was tarmacked, a grey whip of a sapling he swore would outlast the lot of them, and she had never painted it true either. In every version it leaned left, as if listening for something up on the ridge that nobody else could hear.

On Thursday she gave up on the sun and mixed the blue instead, the teal from the tin marked with a thumbprint of Dad's old cadmium. She laid the sky down in long strokes, pink bleeding into gold where the cloud edges touched, and when the light came she saw why the sun had failed. It had been drawn as a thing above the hills. It needed to be a thing behind them, a rumour before it was a fact.

She left the rays a little short on the left, where the lane bent out of sight, so that anyone ordering a scone would have to walk out to the gate to see the rest. The milk lorry honked twice. Ruth wiped her fingers, signed the bottom corner in small capitals, and went to put the kettle on.
