Mountains, bicycle and heartbeat on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo runs across the forearm, showing a row of mountain peaks on the left, a bicycle silhouette in the centre and a heartbeat trace stretching to the right. The linework is simple and clean with solid black fills on the bicycle and mountains. The background shows a white shirt and a poster with the words KEEP CALM, and the arm is photographed against a plain, warm-toned backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, for this one is about a bicycle that climbed a mountain it had no business climbing. My grandfather told it to me the summer the fair came through Hebden with its painted horses and its lamp that never went out. There was a lad called Tomas Greaves who sold lemonade from a barrow and had a bike with one good wheel and one wheel that wobbled like a drunk at a wedding. Every morning he rode it up the long road past the quarry to see the peaks standing grey against the sky, and every morning the fairground man laughed at him and said a machine like that would never get past the first bend.

One evening the fairground man's daughter, Ada, came running down the lane with her shoes in her hand. Her father had wagered the whole take of the week on a race to the top of Crowstone, the highest of the peaks, and nobody would ride it for him. Tomas had sand in his teeth and no money at all, but he said he would go if she would hold the lamp at the summit. She agreed, and she stood there after, still holding it, while he came up the last scree with his heart knocking like a drum under his ribs.

He reached the top just as the light gave out. Ada lifted the lamp, and in its glow he saw the whole valley laid out below, each ridge a dark tooth in the dusk, and the thin white road looping down like a line drawn on a chart. The fair's lights were a scatter of coins far off. He never told anyone what he felt up there. He only said, when they asked, that the wobbling wheel had never once let him fall, and that Ada still had the lamp when they rode back down together in the dark.
