Mouse-ear balloons and hearts on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three balloons shaped like mouse ears float on strings, in pink, teal and purple, with small red hearts and four-pointed sparkles scattered around them. The balloons have bold black outlines, with soft highlights and shading that give them volume. Another tattoo with green leaves and purple shapes is partly visible at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the Channel has got under the pier boards again, and Dolly Prentice is scolding her tray of balloons as if they owe her money. You lean on the rail outside the Pavilion with a shilling you had been saving for the last waltz. She jams a pump into a round red balloon, squeezes twice, and the thing swells into a pair of round ears with a face nobody asked for. "Three for a shilling, love, and they'll outlive the band."

You take the teal and the purple, because the red one has already been tied to a child who won't stop crying about it. Dolly knots the strings in a fisherman's loop she swears her father taught her on a Lowestoft trawler, then tucks a small red heart of card into the twine and dusts the lot with glitter from a paper twist she keeps in her apron. Inside, the hall is a blur of tailcoats, tea-stained cups and a slow foxtrot that loses its way every eight bars. Nobody looks up at the balloons except you.

You dance with them tied to your wrist, turning under the chandeliers while the strings slide through your fingers. Each time the floor tilts toward the sea, the purple one bumps the ceiling and sheds a little sparkle onto the boards. When the bandleader announces the last waltz, you realise you haven't once thought about the time.

At midnight Dolly is still at the rail, pumping air into a fresh balloon for a boy who has run out of patience. She doesn't look up as you pass, only nods at the strings. You step out into the wind and let go of the purple one first, then the teal, and watch them climb past the lamps as if they have somewhere better to be.
