Moustache tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single black moustache design on the side of a finger, with a curled, tapered shape. The ink is solid and dark with smooth edges and no shading. The plain light background keeps the focus on the small, simple design.

Nobody on the Oxford cut believed Dorrie Vane had ever been a sailor, though she kept the Marigold Rose tied up at Hillmorton for eleven winters and swore the drydock lads owed her a pint. What she had was a steady hand with a brush and a habit of painting anything that stayed still long enough: the name board, the lock beams, once the back of a sulking heron.

The summer I turned fourteen she gave me a moustache. Not on my face. We were sat on the roof with a jar of cold tea, and she took a fine sable from her tin, dipped it in black enamel, and drew one curl along the side of my middle finger, then the other, tapering each end to a point like a fishhook. It took under a minute. "There," she said. "Now you'll look like a man who knows the locks." I held it up to the sun and felt absurdly grown.
The paint wore off in a fortnight, but I kept the shape in my head. Years later, when the Marigold went for scrap and Dorrie went into the home at Rugby, I sat by her bed with my hand on the blanket. She looked at my finger, then at me, and said the curls had come out crooked. I told her they hadn't. She laughed until the nurse came in to see what the fuss was about.
We never did find out who had the scrap yard's keys that spring. I still have the sable, and every February I dip it in enamel out of habit and paint a single curl on the lock beam nearest the Rose's old mooring, where the water stays brown and slow.
