Tibbald had been sent up the valley road in the last week of October with a chisel, a sack of lime and orders to carve the King's likeness into the flank of Mount Sallow before the snow closed the pass. He reached the inn at Cray Ford soaked and sour, and found that the only warm thing in the place was the cook's stove and a dented tin mug on the windowsill.

Marit poured him coffee so black it looked like ink, and the surface lay as still as a pond. "Look," she said, tipping the mug toward the glass. Under the ring of the rim, the peak of Sallow stood up sharp and white with its three teeth of rock. Tibbald had spent a month trying to make stone agree with a king's wishes and had never once seen the mountain look so plainly like itself.
He sat up through the night sketching, but every outline he drew came out as a cup with a handle on the right. By morning the lime sack was damp and unopened. He went up the road with the mug buttoned inside his coat, its handle knocking his ribs at every step.
At the foot of the mountain he set the mug on a ledge of granite, filled it with snowmelt and waited for the sun to find the water. The King's face could wait for another mason. The peak shivered in the cup, then steadied, and Tibbald sat down on the cold stone beside it and did not pick up his chisel once.
