The creature came out of the wreck of the gamekeeper's cart the week the river flooded, and my mother said we could not leave it to the rooks. It was no bigger than a loaf, blue as a jay's back, with ears like a moth's wings and one eye so wide it caught all the lamplight in the kitchen. It did not speak for three days. It only sat on the flagstones with its back half turned to us, as if we were weather it had decided to wait out.

Mrs Tanner said it was a changeling and should go back under the oak roots with a saucer of milk. Father said nothing, which was how he agreed with things. I sat up with it instead, wrapped in my grandmother's shawl, and mended a split in its left ear with green thread. On the fourth night it shifted closer to the stove and let its head rest against my knee, and it began saying one word over and over, soft as a hymn: ohana.
The spring the wood came green again, the men went up to the cutting and the bridge gave way under the Harcourt cart. Mrs Tanner's boy came running with the news at dusk, and before anyone had found a lantern the creature was already at the gate, pointing up the track with its whole small body.
We went out with rope and lanterns. The creature walked ahead through the alders with one hand held back to make sure I was still there. We brought the Harcourts home across the ford, all four of them, the youngest asleep on my shoulder. At the gate the creature turned round at last, looked me full in the face with that enormous eye, and held out its hand the way my mother did when she wanted us in from the rain.
