Stitch and Ohana lettering on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small blue cartoon character, Stitch, sits with his feet together and his large ears curled back, with the word OHANA in bold black lettering beneath him. The figure is shaded in blue with lighter highlights and darker shadows, and the lettering is solid black with a looping O. The close-up shows the ankle and lower leg, with a green case and a blue cloth in the background.

The crate came off the Rotterdam boat stencilled FRAGILE, and it was the only thing on the quay that had ever bitten Dennis Prothero. Mags Tremayne had the lid off before he finished swearing. Inside, curled in a nest of wet netting, sat something blue with ears like two folded sails and a nose the size of a shirt button, and it looked at her as though she owed it money.

Nobody on the harbour could say where it had come from. The customs man said it wasn't on the manifest, the vicar said it wasn't in Leviticus, and the ginger cat from the chandlery sat on the bottom step and refused to comment. Mags called it Stitch because of the seam down its back, where someone had clearly sewn it together in a hurry. It ate a whole tray of pilchards, fixed the winch on the fish market by poking at it for an afternoon, and sat beside her on the step each evening with its feet together, humming like a kettle coming to the boil.
Then the council arrived with their clipboards to say it had to go back in the crate and be shipped somewhere with proper paperwork. Stitch climbed onto the sign above the bait shop door, pulled the chalk from its hook and wrote one word across the slate in capitals, leaning hard on the O. Mags asked him what it meant. He tapped his own chest, then hers, then the pier, the gulls and the lad sweeping the slipway.
The council took the clipboards home. The crate went back to Rotterdam empty, and on wet mornings the slate still shows a faint blue smudge where the chalk was rubbed, and Mags leaves the kettle on for whoever is still out in the bay.
