The apples came down all at once this year, the way you said they would when we were small enough to climb the Bramley tree. Dad has me up the ladder at six every morning now, and my hands smell of wasp sting and cider. I thought of you the whole of Tuesday, mostly because of the carrot.

Your snowman is still in the back of the potting shed, propped against the sack of blood and bone. He lost one stick arm to the mower in July, but he's holding up well, grinning at the windfalls like they owe him money. I've taken to talking to him while I sort the crates. Dad says that's a sign of something, but he says that about most things.

The flower you pressed into his belly in February has come up through the cracked floor where the water barrel leaks. It's the only pink thing for yards, so I haven't had the heart to pull it, and the grass round it has gone a green you'd hardly believe for September. I think he's been looking after it, the way he did with the bees.

Come home for the last picking, won't you? Bring the carrot back if you still have it. He's missing his nose, and I'm fairly sure he'll stop grinning altogether if nobody tells him the frost is coming.
