Be the change script with birds on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot with the words "Be the change..." written in a thin, flowing script, with a looping flourish before the B. Three small bird silhouettes in dark ink sit beside the final word, near the toes. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on light skin, with the foot filling the frame against a pale patterned floor.

Every September the flock gathered on the telegraph wire above the orchard, a long dark line that folded and unfolded like a sheet being shaken out. This year there were fewer of them. Gwyn had sold the top field to a man from Shrewsbury who meant to put up houses, and the wire had been quiet since the surveyors came with their poles and their bright orange tape.

On the last evening Nell climbed the ladder to the loft, where the birds had roosted in the eaves all summer, and found three of them on the sill, fat and restless, not yet ready to join the cloud. She didn't try to catch them. She only opened the little window wider and said the words aloud, trailing off where the chalk had trailed off, so the sentence hung there unfinished.

In the morning the wire was empty. Gwyn found the step scrubbed clean except for one curl of white chalk, drawn like a river bend, and beside it three small smudges where feet had stood, all pointing towards the hills. Nell was already halfway up the lane with the chalk in her pocket, going after them.
