One-eyed triangle figure on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a person's lower face and upper chest, with a tattoo of a triangular figure with a single eye, a rectangular top, a bow tie and thin stick arms and legs. The linework is simple and uniform in black ink, and the shading is limited to light fills on the body of the triangle. The figure is centred on the chest above a blue dress with a white heart pattern, and the background is softly out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hall still smelled of floor polish, the same as it had in 1998, and Maggie Pryce stood by the trestle table pretending to read name badges while she counted the fire exits. Dev Sandhu found her there with two paper cups of squash and a grin that had got them both sent to the head's office in Year Nine. "Still got the notebook?" he asked, as if they'd seen each other last week.

The notebook had been a Pukka Pad with a cracked spine, and every page of its back half was covered in the same figure: a triangle with one eye, a top hat drawn as a flat rectangle, a bow tie, and stick arms and legs that never quite touched the margins. They had called it the Oracle. The rule was that you asked it one question a term, drew it properly, and it answered by making the eye flick towards whatever you should do next. It had told Maggie to stop going out with Callum Reid. It had told Dev nothing at all, which he maintained was the most suspicious answer of the lot.

"I asked it something last week," Dev said, and his voice dropped in a way she didn't like. "Flicked the pad open at my kitchen table and drew it in biro. It asked me what I'd like to owe."

Maggie looked past him to the bar, where the chalkboard menu had been wiped clean that afternoon. In the bottom corner, in fresh white chalk, someone had drawn a triangle with one eye, a bow tie, and thin arms raised as if to say, well, here we are. Nobody near it seemed to have noticed. Maggie reached into her handbag, found the old biro, and quietly drew a bow tie on her own name badge before she could think better of it. Across the room, the chalk eye opened.
