Sit down, boy, and keep your boots off my good chair. You want the story of the sign, or you want to keep fidgeting? Right. Out past the salt flats, where the road forgets it was ever a road, there was a filling station with one pump and a tin roof that sang when the wind came. Nobody had painted its back wall for years. Then Eli Marrow came through in a van the colour of weak tea, carrying three brushes and a tin of black enamel, and he stopped to ask for water.

He had hands that had lettered coffins and cattle gates, and he spent four days on that wall. He did not paint it plain. He wrote One Love in a joined hand and wrapped the letters in swashes, looping the O so it trailed down like a rope dropped from a bridge, and letting the tail of the L run out past the edge of the boards and off towards the horizon. Folk slowed their trucks to read it. One driver said the letters looked like they were trying to leave. Eli laughed and said that was the point of a good line: it always has somewhere to go.

On the last evening the wind dropped, and a woman in a dusty blue car pulled in with a child asleep in the back seat. She had no money for the pump. Eli filled her tank anyway and told her to read the wall before she left. She read it twice, then she cried a little and drove on east with the window down.

Eli never came back for his tin. The wall still says what it says, black on the sun-bleached boards, and the swashes still reach for the road. That's all the story is, boy. Now go and fetch me the kettle before I change my mind about you.
