Open book tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline drawing of an open book with fanned pages sits on the inner wrist, shown in dark ink with light shading along the pages. The hand is raised with dark nail polish, and the blurred sink and bathroom fittings fill the background in a sepia tone. The tattoo is centred in the lower half of the frame, with the photo taken at a close angle.

Dates, wind directions, the day the top field flooded and the day the ewes lambed early, all in pencil that had faded to the colour of weak tea.

She sat on an upturned crate in the lambing shed with the lamp hissing above her and turned the pages one at a time. The paper was cold and stiff. Somewhere near February the entries stopped being weather and became lists: feed, coal, a name she didn't know, Ada, written twice and then crossed out so hard the nib had torn the sheet.
Outside, the yard gate banged in the wind. Nell pressed the book flat against her knee and let the pages fan out under her palm, the way they had when she was small and he'd let her hold it open on the kitchen table like a map. She could still feel the ridge where the spine had been glued and reglued.
She thought about the crossed-out name for a long time. Then she took the pencil from behind her ear, found the last clean line, and wrote the date and the word snow. It was the only true thing she could put down that night, and it was enough to close the book on.
