Orange and blue ring tattoos on the shins

Other · Mixed · Photo

Two legs are raised in front of a plain tiled wall, each showing a single ring tattoo just below the knee. The left ring is outlined in orange and the right in blue, with a loose, hand-drawn line that has slightly uneven weight. The ring sits centrally on each leg and the plain background keeps the focus on the two marks.

Nobody at Scarborough ever won the big pink teddy from Dunmore's stall, and that was the point of it, his daughter said. She was nine that summer and had counted every toss. The rings were cut from old hawser and painted by hand in two colours only, because Dunmore said two colours were honest and anything more was showing off. Orange for the rings he meant to give away, blue for the ones he kept back.

Ada noticed the blue ones always landed true. She noticed too that her father never let anyone else touch the blue pile, and that he tapped each ring with a thumbnail before it went on the peg, the way a baker checks a loaf. When she asked, he said the blue rings had belonged to his own father and were cut from the same rope that once moored a boat called the Patience, and that they had a habit of finding what they were thrown for.

The night the stall was packed up for good, she carried the last orange ring down to the harbour wall and dropped it over a rusted bollard. It slid down the iron and sank into the green water. Then she sat on the cold stone and waited, feeling foolish, until the blue ring she had hidden in her coat pocket grew warm against her ribs. She took it out and laid it over the same bollard.

It caught on the top bolt and stayed there, neatly, as if someone had been waiting for it to decide. Her father found them at first light, the orange ring drowned under the tide and the blue one hanging level and calm, and he did not take it down.
